Brokered dialogue study around the concept of Participant Engagement in Research

Exploring how “patient engagement” is characterized and understood by those holding a range of perspectives in the chronic pain field.

Exchanging Perspectives through Film-based Dialogue

The purpose of this brokered dialogue is to understand the ways “patient engagement” is characterized and understood by those holding a range of relevant perspectives within the chronic pain field. Brokered Dialogue (BD) is a film-based qualitative research method that is designed to study complex or controversial health and social issues, and to address situations where dialogue may be contested, complex, absent or difficult. Co-Lead Dr. Janet Parsons is the co-inventor of this research method. It explores multiple perspectives on a given topic and the focus of analysis is the interaction of perspectives, which is facilitated through the medium of film.

We will learn collaboratively and carefully how to engage people with lived experience of chronic pain and marginalization (PWLECPM), establish when to engage PWLECPM, and where to engage PWLECPM. We will develop approaches to engagement that reflect the diversity of PWLECPM in terms of their comfort levels, needs, and interests.

The Brokered Dialogue—along with the Community Consultations—will establish the groundwork for PEPR’s Research Hub.
